Bloomberg Automates Japanese Government Bond Market-on-Close Trading
Bloomberg completed its first fully automated JGB Market-on-Close trade, streamlining the workflow aligned to Japan's BB3P Hikene Trading reference rate.
Bloomberg has executed the first fully automated Japanese Government Bond (JGB) Market-on-Close trade, marking a significant operational milestone for one of the world's largest sovereign debt markets. The achievement follows the rollout of a new electronic workflow on Bloomberg's fixed-income trading platform.
The automated process is aligned with BB3P, also known as Hikene Trading, which serves as the Market-on-Close reference rate for JGBs. By integrating automation into this pricing mechanism, Bloomberg aims to reduce manual intervention at one of the most time-sensitive moments in the trading day — the market close, when benchmark rates are established and widely referenced by institutional investors.

Japanese Government Bonds represent a cornerstone of global fixed-income markets, and operational efficiency in their trading infrastructure carries broad implications for asset managers, banks, and central bank operations that rely on accurate end-of-day pricing. Automating the Market-on-Close workflow could reduce settlement risk and human error while accelerating execution for participants.
The development reflects a broader industry push to bring greater electronic efficiency to government bond markets in Asia, where voice-brokered and semi-manual processes have historically remained prevalent compared to more automated Western counterparts. Bloomberg's move positions its electronic trading infrastructure as a competitive venue for JGB activity as Japanese monetary policy continues to attract global attention.
